Work experience

Evans IEC offers Senior Bridging Course students the opportunity to participate in a work experience program where they can use their new English skills in a work environment.

IEC Work Experience 2014

Nineteen students in SBC participated in a week of work experience in August this year.  These students have been in Australia for less than a year, so as well as improving their speaking and comprehension skills, they were able to see what life was like in an Australian workplace.  Students now realise the difficulties and rewards of caring and teaching children.  Many SBC students speak ‘retail' for example: filling, recovery, scanning, spruiking and facing up shelves!

To prepare SBC for work experience, students learnt how to: write resumes, find and apply for jobs by writing a cover letter, present a resume folder and participate in interviews both in person and over the phone with their employers.

Students worked in:

  • a childcare centre
  • a primary school
  • Coles
  • Target
  • Woolworths
  • Best and Less
  • Trade Secret
  • Yogurberry

Students have travelled to:

  • Fairfield
  • Mt Druitt
  • North Richmond
  • Blacktown
  • Toongabbie
  • Plumpton
  • Pendle Hill

SBC teachers rang the students' employees and visited their workplaces during the week.  Congratulations to the students and teachers involved in the program as there were only positive evaluations given by the employers.

There is a display in C1 with comments from employers about their IEC work experience students.
