Society and Culture

Course Overview:

The central concern of Society and Culture Stage 6 is the interaction of persons, societies, cultures, environments and time. Society and Culture draws on cross-disciplinary concepts and social research methodologies from anthropology, communication, cultural studies, media studies, philosophy, psychology, social ecology and sociology.

 

What will you learn about?

Preliminary Course

  • The Social and Cultural World (30%) – Case study on the Amish people
  • Personal and Social Identity (40%) – Case study on the Yolgnu people
  • Intercultural Communication (30%) – Case study on Japan

The aim of the preliminary course is to develop a student’s knowledge, understanding, skills, values and attitudes essential to achieving social and cultural literacy by examining the interactions between persons, societies, cultures and environments across time.

HSC Course

  • Core: Social and Cultural Continuity and Change (30%) – Iraq as case study
  • Depth Studies (40%)
  • A choice of two of the following:
  • Popular Culture - Teen Films
  • Belief Systems - Islam
  • Social Conformity and Non-Conformity - Hipsters

Students will also complete independent social research into a topic of their own choice and present a Personal Interest Project (30% of course time and worth 40% of external HSC Assessment Mark)

The HSC course builds upon the skills and knowledge developed in the Preliminary course, as well as giving students the opportunity to create and Personal Interest Project on a topic of their choice. This project is a fantastic chance for students to investigate our contemporary society.

What types of assessments will be used to determine your final mark?

Oral presentations, extended responses, examinations and Personal Interest Project Drafts. You will be provided with an assessment schedule but may also access assessment due dates in the assessment tab on the school website.

 

Fees:

There is a $10 fee that is included with this subject.

 

Recommendations:

It is recommended that students are confident in their extended response writing, as well as having a keen interest in undertaking independent research.
