Course Overview:
The Stage 6 Personal Development, Health and Physical Education course aims to develop in each student a capacity to think critically about key issues related to health and physical activity in order to make informed decisions that support and contribute to healthy active lifestyles and communities.

Preliminary Course
Preliminary Core Topics (60%):
- Better Health for Individuals
- The Body in Motion
Preliminary Optional Topics (40%):
- First Aid
- Fitness Choices
The aim of the Preliminary course is to develop the foundation knowledge that will be built upon in the HSC course. It focuses on an individual’s perception and meanings of health, how the body moves, the management of first aid situations, as well as the influences of the various fitness choices on individuals.
Higher School Certificate Course
HSC Core Topics (60%):
- Health Priorities in Australia
- Factors Affecting Performance
HSC Optional Topics (40%):
- Sports Medicine
- Improving Performance
The HSC course builds upon the skills and knowledge developed in the Preliminary course. Students focus on the priority issues related to the health status of Australians, approaches to training and skill development and the factors that affect physical performance, prevention and management of sports injuries, as well as the applications of various training methods to improve performance.

What types of assessments will be used to determine your final mark?
In the Preliminary course, there will be three formal assessment tasks, with a weighting that ranges from 20-40% of your overall mark. One of these assessment tasks will be an examination.
In the HSC course, there will be four formal assessment tasks, with a weighting that ranges from 10-40% of your overall mark. One of these assessment tasks will be an examination, worth no more than 30%.
Fees
There is a $10 fee that is included with this subject, which is used to buy textbooks.
Recommendations:
It is recommended that students have interest and ability in the various aspects of PDHPE. Some career options that this course may lead to include nutrition, physiotherapy, medicine, personal training, sports coaching and teaching.
